Osteoporosis can lead to sudden hearing loss
The doctor said Kay Jane Tin Head of team-based study and endocrinologist at Chi Mei Medical
Center in Tainan: "We have seen many patients with osteoporosis, some of whom had complained of hearing problems and then we started looking in research studies concerned with this matter."
He added: "According to earlier reports it appears that there is a causal relationship, but the risk factor was not clear."
In the study, published in the printed Endocrinology and Metabolism, Tin team analyzed the data for each of Taiwan's population about health insurance certificates.
The researchers compared 10 660 patients have been diagnosed with the fragility of the bones between 1998 and 2008, including up to 31 980 patients were randomly selected patients is osteoporosis.
The researchers followed the case of all patients in the year 2011 and show them that a number of injured sudden deafness among those who suffer from osteoarthritis of about 10 people out of every 10 thousand people a year, compared with 6 out of every 10 thousand people a year from non-infected osteoporosis.
Tin in the study also pointed out that patients who suffer from severe cases of osteoporosis have an increased risk of sudden deafness for those with milder cases of fragility.
Tin said: "Our study does not answer the question whether the monitoring and early treatment for osteoporosis may reduce the risk of sensorineural hearing loss," adding that there is a need for further studies to answer this question. There is a need for more research also to understand the link between osteoporosis and hearing loss
